Nursery and Reception

Early Years Foundation Stage

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides a rich variety of opportunities through which the children develop independence and confidence. The Foundation Stage curriculum is based on learning through play, talk and new experiences covering the seven areas of learning and development: Personal, Social and Emotional development; Physical development; Communication and language; Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the world and Expressive arts and design. Our themes are fun and relevant to the children’s experiences.

We have introduced more flexible continuous provision (roleplay, small world, mark making, fine motor control, investigation and so many more on a continuous carousel) where the children have an input into all our areas in the classroom – when they change, what we change it in to and what they would like to see. They also help me make the changes a lot of the time, so you will see handwritten signs and props made by the children themselves.

Small classes ensure the children are learning, interested and are very much at the heart of the teacher’s planning. This enables children to make outstanding progress.

The EYFS staff are very open and encourage communication with the parents by the use of Tapestry and keeping parents updated with children’s learning.

Old Buckenham Hall Nursery

The Nursery is an integral part of the Pre-Prep at Old Buckenham Hall. It is led by highly skilled practitioners who place the children at the centre of their learning.

In September 2018, we revealed the beautiful new learning environment in the OBH Nursery. Inspired by the Emilia Reggio approach in Italy we have brought the outside into the classroom with natural and sustainable furniture and resources. We have endeavored to be environmentally responsible and have eco-friendly lighting and heating in the classroom, along with a strong emphasis on recycling. As well as bringing the outside in, we enjoy taking the Nursery children out of the classroom as often as possible and are currently undertaking a joint project with the Year 8 pupils to design and build our very own outdoor classroom.

There are two Nursery classes: Little Raindrops for the 2-3 year-olds and Sunbeams for the 3-4 year-olds, each taught by a qualified teacher specialising in Early Years. Throughout their time in the Nursery, the children are encouraged to achieve and develop their potential, in preparation for entry into the Reception class.
