Children are naturally inquisitive and nothing captures their imagination more than some of the stories and civilisations from the past. Not only that but it utilises some of the most important learning skills: critical thinking, creativity, discernment, evaluation, exploration and communication.

The main aim of the History department is to instill in the children a high level of enjoyment and curiosity about studying history; to light a spark of enthusiasm about the study of the past that will stay with them always.

The children are given a broad range of cultures and periods of history to study: both ancient and modern, both of this country and abroad. Chronology and themes are reinforced so that children can identify how these episodes fit together to shape our modern world. We aim to create independent, skillful and thoughtful learners: children who are not afraid to ask questions, to follow their own interests and to express their ideas.

We develop in children the skills necessary to investigate the past and then present their findings through different mediums. Children are given the chance to form their own questions and then find the path to the answers.

We also use the study of the past to encourage valuable qualities which are relevant to all aspects of life: tolerance, discernment, global awareness and respect.

As we are in the heart of historic East Anglia, there are plenty of opportunities for trips: Colchester Castle to study the Romans in Britain, West Stow Anglo-Saxon village to study Invaders and Settlers, Kentwell Hall to study the Tudors, Hedingham Castle to study Castles and The Normans, and The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge to study the Ancient Egyptian artefacts, to name but a few.
